5 Truths About Life After College

Today, I’m sharing 5 truths about life after college.

During our college years, we are so pressured to have our careers figured out. Once we get accepted into college, we are supposed to choose our majors, and then off we go… on a 4 year journey working towards that one major we chose our Freshman/Sophomore year.

I definitely am not a fan with having to choose a major and having to stick with it. It limits you so much. How are you supposed to know what you want so early on? Anyways, that’s for a different blog post.

We have a finish line, and that’s to graduate and receive our degree. But what happens after that?

Everyone’s life is different, and some of these may not apply to you. These are simply my own observations and life experiences.

1. YOU MAY NOT LIKE YOUR FIRST JOB

You don’t know what you don’t like until you try it, and a full-time job after college is probably your first ever job in the corporate world (excluding internships). It may be something that you end up not liking at all, or something that you end up loving. Either way, post-grad life is all about discovering what your true passions are.

You’re going to be working for the rest of your life, so it’s worth it to experiment with different types of positions at an early stage. It’s ok if you don’t like your first job. I feel like that needs to be said more often.

2. FINANCES WILL BE AMPLIFIED

Whether you are beginning your full-time or still on the hunt for one after college, your finances will be amplified more than ever.

Your living expenses may have increased. You will start to think about saving up for big purchases in the future like houses, cars, traveling, gap year, etc. And the devil, your student debt payments, will start coming for you. There’s many financial factors that amplify in your post-grad life.

No one really talks about this during college, so if there’s one thing I’d change when I was a student, it’d be to be more financially literate.

3. PEOPLE ARE ON DIFFERENT PATHS TO SUCCESS

I can’t stress this enough. Life after college is when everyone veers off to their different goals. Remember in college, that one common goal was to graduate and receive your degree? It’s different now. Some people are starting their dream jobs. Other people are traveling and taking a gap year. There are people who are still applying and still trying to figure things out.

We’re all going our separate directions, and I think it’s important to realize that. Some people may reach their success earlier than others, but that doesn’t mean you won’t reach yours. Like I said, we all have our different paths to success. Don’t compare your journey to someone else’s journey… because it’ll just mess you up- mentally and physically lol.

4. YOUR SOCIAL LIFE WILL CHANGE

Now that you and your friends are beginning your new journey in life, socializing may change. We all are busy figuring everything out, so it’s completely normal for your time to be occupied.

Your life changes, and so does your schedule.

5. YOU’LL FEEL LOST AT TIMES

Now that you’ve graduated college, there’s no end. Literally. Now, you’re supposed to live life as it comes to you. Maybe you want to continue your education or maybe you want to start a family. So many things can happen during your life after college. There’s no conventional way to go about it, or at least I don’t believe there’s such thing as “conventional”. Everyone’s life is so unique.

There will be times where you take a step back and you’re like, “Wtfff do I do now? What do I even want to do?” I’m just here to say that it’s ok to feel lost. It’s part of the journey. Keep working on yourself and your personal growth.

You’ll figure it out. Everything is as it should be.
