Hot rollers for hair will give you a good 90’s blowout look that makes your hair voluminous and bouncy. I’ve always loved that hairstyle, so I finally decided to buy a set of hot rollers to try it out for myself.

The end results were perfect and I definitely think its worth a try, especially because it’s affordable and you can achieve the look at home without spending lots of money. Here’s my first impression and a few tips to make your experience with hot rollers for hair easier.

What You Need

Layered Haircut – Your haircut makes a huge difference in the end result. You won’t get that 90’s bouncy look if you have one length, so here’s what to ask for during your next haircut. Let your hairstylist know you want layers to create a lot of flow and movement – layers all around with heavy face framing layers. Showing them a pic of 90’s layers is also helpful, so make your Pinterest board and be sure to share your inspo!

Hot Rollers – 1 1/2 inch hot rollers for hair will give you the bouncy, voluminous curls. Conair’s Xtreme Big Curls Hairsetter is affordable and perfect for beginners. This is the exact set I used. I bought my set from Ulta, but it’s also available at Target. The set includes 12 hot rollers. with 12 super clips – both metal and plastic clips.

Hair Oil – The Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil will help smooth frizz and flyaways to give you the soft blowout look. Plus, it’ll also help hydrate and boost shine.

Tips + Pointers

  • Hot Rollers Will Smell Weird – When the hot rollers heat up, it will dispense a weird odor. My sister described it as gas and I described it as something burning. It caught me off guard at first, but my mom said hers smelled like that in the 90’s, so it’s probably normal (let me know if it isn’t!). The good thing is that the smell will not cling on to your hair. It’s just the odor of the heated container.
  • Tuck Ends of Hair When Rolling – The first mistake I made was not tucking the ends of my hair under the hair that I would be rolling up. This caused my hair to consistently fall off of the roller. Unlike velcro hair rollers, you need to tuck the ends of your hair, so that it stays put.
  • Section Hair – Section your hair in 12: 3 on the top, 4-5 in the back, and 2 on both sides of your head. I made the mistake of not sectioning my hair prior to using the hot rollers. The kit only comes with 12 hot rollers, which means you need to section your hair properly. I didn’t do this, so I ended up running out of hot rollers and had to remove and reuse a few in different sections. Pre-mapping your hair beforehand will save you a lot of time and frustration.
  • Brush Your Hair – To achieve the soft blowout look, brush your hair, but not too much.

First Impression and Thoughts

  • The hot rollers for hair are hard to use at first, but with time and practice, I can see this routine taking 15-20 minutes.
  • I have thick hair, so I thought I would need more hot rollers for my hair. However, next time I need to pre-section my hair as mentioned above and I think it’ll be fine.
  • The smell took my off guard and I wish it wasn’t so strong.
  • The volume and bouncy curls lasted 5+ hours. I didn’t add any hairspray to hold the curls, so I was pretty satisfied with how long the volume lasted.
  • Overall, I think these hot rollers are worth it for $40. It looks like I went to the salon to get a professional blowout.

Let me know if you’ve tried hot rollers before and please share any tips you have. I love hearing from others!
