If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by what to wear, curating a few summer capsule wardrobe staples is the perfect way to build a strong foundation, figure out your true style, and discover what you genuinely enjoy wearing. It also makes it easier to decide which trends are worth following because you’ll already know what works for you.

My recent trip to New York City really emphasized how important this is. The weather was unpredictable, and I didn’t pack properly for the changing forecast. As I tried to mix and match what I brought, I realized some pieces just didn’t work together. That’s when it hit me: a well-thought-out capsule wardrobe would’ve solved so much of the frustration. (Though to be fair, the constantly shifting weather played a part, too.)
It can feel overwhelming, but when you build a solid foundation of elevated basics and bring those on a trip, getting dressed becomes effortless. You won’t have to second-guess whether pieces go together.
With summer officially here, I wanted to share 11 summer capsule wardrobe staples that will simplify your closet and serve you season after season.

White Linen Button-Down
Lightweight, breathable, and versatile enough to throw over any outfit. Look for an oversized fit so you can wear it as outerwear or button it up as your main top. It also doubles as a perfect cover-up for a hot beach day.

High-Rise Shorts
Find a pair of shorts you can easily dress up or down. Denim is a great option if you love the look of jeans but don’t want to deal with heavy fabric in the heat, especially since full-length jeans usually aren’t the first thing you reach for when the sun is blazing. For something even more lightweight, linen shorts are a perfect choice. The fabric is breathable, moisture-wicking, and dries quickly, making it ideal for staying cool in summer. I own these shorts from Aritzia and love dressing them up and down– it’s so chic.

Neutral Tank and Classic Tees
Neutral tanks and tees are elevated basics that belong in every wardrobe. They truly go with everything. These staples aren’t just for summer, they transition seamlessly through all seasons. Make sure to keep black, white, gray, and beige tanks and tees in rotation. Since these basics are worn year-round, it can be worth investing in higher-quality pieces. I’ve been eyeing the Loewe tank tops. I know, I know… They’re definitely a splurge, but they’re the kind of item that will stay in your closet for years. Spending $450 might sound wild at first, but if you’re into designer, luxe clothing, you’ll get your money’s worth with the cost per wear. For more budget-friendly options, I love buying my basics from H&M and Uniqlo.

Midi-Dress
Love a good silk or satin midi slip dress. It’s one of those pieces to have in a classic summer wardrobe because you can easily dress it down with casual slides for errands or a farmer’s market run, or elevate it with heels for a date night. I have a few slip dresses from Victoria’s Secret that I’ve worn on vacation, while lounging at home, and even to formal events like weddings. It’s a truly versatile piece, and how you style it makes all the difference.

Wide-Leg Pants
Look for flowy, wide-leg pants in cotton or linen. Comfort is key during the summer, and breathable fabrics make all the difference. Everlane, Aritzia, and Gap both have great options to choose from.

Dressy Sandals
Add a pair of strappy sandals to your wardrobe for those moments when you want to dress up your outfits. If you like a bit of height, opt for kitten heels. They’re comfortable enough for everyday wear and easy to incorporate into your regular wardrobe. A heel that’s too high can feel limiting and may only work for more formal occasions.

Comfortable Slides
A good everyday pair of shoes that you can grab is super important. I love the Birkenstocks with the gold hardware because its a timeless summer style that elevates your look without being too much. But it’s casual enough to wear everyday. Super comfy and I’ve had for years.

Oversized Shirt Jacket
For those days that stretch into cooler nights, it’s always smart to have a lightweight jacket on hand. Some of us experience warm summer evenings, while others might need an extra layer. Either way, having a breathable outerwear option is key for those longer days or when the weather isn’t quite warm enough to go without it.

Blazer
Everyone needs a blazer in their wardrobe. Whether you’re wearing it to work, a girls’ night out, or a date, a blazer is a classic staple that instantly elevates any look. For summer, opt for a lightweight fabric to keep things breathable. I’ve been eyeing ones from Aritzia.

Everyday Purse
Find a purse that doesn’t have any hardware. Or if it does have hardware, ensure it’s minimal. This will make it easier to accessorize, so you’re not limited to only wearing gold or silver. Maybe you’ve been eyeing a designer purse. This is something you can splurge on since it will essentially be with you for years.

Classic Sunglasses
I love playing around with fun sunglasses, but having a classic pair that goes with every outfit is just as important. Once you establish your go-to sunglasses, you can occasionally mix things up with a more playful pair to add some personality.
How to Style Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe Staples

Why These Staples Are Worth the Investment
I’ve started being more mindful and intentional about how I spend my money, so I haven’t gone on shopping sprees in a while, the kind where I’d impulsively buy things only for them to collect dust later. I used to think that if I liked something, I could always find an occasion to wear it, but most of the time, I never did. Once I became more aware of this and disciplined myself not to just swipe impulsively, I began to understand my true style.
If you’re anything like me, investing in high-quality closet essentials that build your foundation will help you discover the items and styles you naturally gravitate toward. Or maybe you already have some of these essentials in your wardrobe (like me). From there, you can start adding fun pieces like playful sunglasses, edgy purses, or statement jewelry. Your sense of style will come more naturally as you begin to recognize the patterns of what truly draws you in.
