Building My Ideal Morning Routine

Ugh I know – I’m three days behind on my writing challenge. This past weekend I was out and about and didn’t make time to sit down and write. That’s on me. I didn’t discipline myself to wake up early morning to write before heading out. I’m going to give myself grace, move on and continue writing <3

This prompt was “My Current Morning Routine & Why It Works,” but if you’ve noticed, I’m in the season of my life where I’m resetting my routines and figuring them out, so surprise – I don’t have a morning routine set.

How My Mornings Have Been Like

I’m guilty of doom scrolling late night until 1am and realizing that I would only be getting 5-6 hours of sleep. It’s such a bad habit that I’ve been struggling to break. Lately, I’ve been getting 6 or less hours of sleep per night and I could definitely feel it the next day. It’s so bad. I’ll wake up at 6:30-7am to start work without even giving myself time to breath or ease in to the day. I know this isn’t healthy for my physical or mental health, so let’s plan on how I could break this bad cycle.

The Night Routine I’m Building

They say in order to have a good morning routine, you need to have a good night routine. I would love to wake up by 5am, so in an ideal world:

  • 7:00pm: Begin winding down – closing shifts like cleaning the kitchen and tidying up
  • 7:30-8:00pm: Showered and in bed. No phone.
  • 8:00-9:00pm: Read a book to sleep by 9pm.

I’ve always been a night owl, so this has consistently been challenging for me. All the successful people I admire have early morning routines, so I really need to lock in and figure out how I could make this a reality for myself. I already start work at 7am, so this will also be beneficial to give myself a slow morning before starting work. Although my last day is March 30th, so my ideal morning routine has a work start time of 9am once I begin freelancing full-time.

My Ideal Morning Routine

  • 5:00am: Wakeup
  • 5:30-7:00am: Gym
  • 7:00-8:00am: Get ready & eat breakfast
  • 8:00-8:30am: Read
  • 8:30-9:00am: Journal
  • 9:00am: Start workday

Time honestly moves so quickly and maybe that’s because I feel like I always have something to do. I know that once I set this morning routine, I’ll feel 100x better. I just feel like lately I’ve been overwhelmed with everything going on in my life. But there comes a point where I’m like I need to change my daily routine to get myself out of this rut I’m in. I need to just power through and set myself up for success. Yes, it’s ok to give myself grace, but definitely need to set that boundary of how much grace I could give myself. We never want to let ourself go too much.

Obviously, I’m going through a lot right now with my current layoff, but I know it’ll get better. I just need to push myself to work on routines that make me feel better. Like I haven’t worked out since the beginning of the holidays which is the longest streak I’ve gone without working out. I did such a great job in 2025 being consistent with my workout routines, so it’s hard not to be bummed that 2026 didn’t start out great. But today I’m going to the studio to do pilates with my sister and I’m just so excited to move my body. I think this will be good. It’ll kickstart a better routine and get me back to a good place.

I don’t want to sound like I’m constantly in a rut – which it’s been sounding like in my past few blog posts. But I’m just being real and letting you into this time of my life where everything isn’t going how I want it. I just know that it’ll get better from here – we all have these moments in our life and that’s totally ok.

xx Destiny
